Pingdi Low-carbon City
Directed by GSAPP faculty: Jeffrey Johnson + Adam Frampton
In collaboration with Shenzhen Design Center and Future + and Shenzhen University

The Studio-X BJ 2015 Summer Workshop is the first of a series of collaborations with the Shenzhen Design Center and Future +. The workshop’s topic of focus is low-carbon cities and architecture. The long-term objective is to inspire a critical discussion and collaboration on sustainable strategies of urban development and architecture between GSAPP students and faculty, Studio-X’s, and local, regional and global institutions and experts in the field. This summer the GSAPP students are collaborating with students and faculty from Shenzhen University.

Project:
Pingdi Low-carbon City is located 30 kilometers northeast of Shenzhen. The total planning area is approximately 53 square kilometers, with a core area of 5 square kilometers and a pilot zone of 1 square kilometer. A total floor area of 1,800,000 square meters is expected to be constructed over the next eight years. The flagship project is part of a comprehensive experimental zone for low-carbon development established nationally. The summer workshop team will focus their research on defining alternative design strategies that will promote low-carbon lifestyles and attract new low-carbon industries to the area. The team will concentrate on examining the existing urban context to seek out alternatives that can be introduced into the planning process of the future development.

Venue:
The workshop will operate out of a pop-up GSAPP Studio-X space provided by the Shenzhen Design Center. During the workshop, multiple public discussions have been planned around the theme of low-carbon cities and architecture. At the conclusion of the workshop, the material produced by the team will be exhibited in the pop-up Studio-X. Additionally, the work will be exhibited at the 3rd Shenzhen Forum on International Low Carbon City. It will also be a recommended project for exhibition in the Shenzhen/Hong Kong Bi-city Biennale of Urbanism\ Architecture 2015.
